WHILE TAKING INTER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COHESION, INTERNAL FRICTION AND STABILITY OF SOIL A SAFETY FACTOR OF 2 IS APPLIED TO THE VALUES OBTAINED
Due to heavy rains during the August 2025 State of Himachal pradesh because of the higher normal stresses due to increasing in the moisture content subjected to lower normal stresses the bearing capacity of soil has been reduced and the angle of internal friction in case of clay liquid has gone to zero even, and the internal relationship between cohesion, internal friction and stability are disturbed, due to increase in the moisture content list by way and virtue of which the soils subject to the higher normal stresses will have lower moisture contents and higher bulk densities than those subjected to lower normal stresses and will this have increase in shearing resistance and cohesion with increasing normal stress. The behavior of soils under loading is very complex, soils of different types differ considerably in their resistance to deformation when stressed and such deformation depends upon the moisture content, bulk density, angle of internal friction of the soil and the method in which the load is applied. Soft and very soft clays to sliding is dependent upon the angle of internal friction, where as clays have a resistance to shearing due to their cohesive strength and shearing strength is dependent on and varies directly as the coefficient of friction and cohesion of the soil. To understand the shear strength of soils is one of the most complex problems of the soil mechanics. There are several methods of testing the shear strength of a soil in a laboratory the most common being (1) Shear box test, (2) Triaxial test (3) Unconfined Compression test (4) Vane test. A number of methods of determining soil moisture content both in the laboratory and in the field have been developed of which the most common are :- Oven Dry method;Sand bath method;Pycno -meter Method;Density method.
