CHARACTERISTICS, CLASSIFICATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF SOIL MECHANICS
Soil mechanics of science study required on the captioned subject matter deliberation related to the structure, engineering properties and the reaction or behavior of soil under loading and the changing weather conditions must have exact solution to every practical problem related and pertinent to the structure. The Chief function of soil studies is to furnish important principles required to supplement and guide the practical experience and free judgement of the Engineer, Although it can not give an exact solution to every practical problem however it is necessary to verify the soil studies and process it under the methods of tests and trials for more accurate results of the soil studies and structure adjustment at the place of classification of soil verified by the elements of soil mechanics, which is useful in predicting the performance of soil under load. There is wide variation in the characteristics of different soils and the performance of each individual soil is effected by its moisture content and density. In general, the properties of soils composed largely of coarse materials are primarily controlled by the characteristics of the particles, but for soils composed largely of clays and colloids the properties are primarily controlled by the moisture content. Behavior of soils containing 30 percent or more clay depends solely on the characteristics of the soil. As for as the classification of soil is concerned it depends upon the particle sizes like boulders, cobbles, pebbles, gravels sand, silt and the clay. According to their texture properties are determined by sieve analysis. The name denotes the constituent predominating in their composition.
