RAPID DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF PLAIN AND REINFORCED CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY REQUIRED TO BRING CLARIFICATIONS AND MODIFICATIONS IN THE LIGHT OF EXPERIENCE REVISION OF THE CODE TO PRACTICAL SITUATIONS , FOUND NECESSARY.

As for as the Indian standard code of practice for plain and Reinforced concrete is concerned it was adopted by the Indian standards institution on October 3,1978 after the draft finalised by the Cement and Concrete sectional committee and approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council .The standard was first published in 1953 under the title code of practice for plain and Reinforced concrete for general building construction and subsequently revised in 1957 and this code was further revised in 1964 and published under modified title "Code of practice for plain and Reinforced concrete"thus enlarging the scope of use of this code and also incorporating a number of changes and additions .The present revision was taken up with a view to keeping a breast with the rapid development in the field of concrete technology and also to bring in further clarifications and modifications in the light of experience gained while applying the provisions of the earlier versions of the code to practical situations. The format and arrangement of clauses in the code have been changed from the earlier version.Section1 General  Section 2 Materials, Workmanship, Inspection and testing,Section 3 General Design Requirements, Section 4 Special Design Requirements for structural Members and System., Section 5 Structural Design (Limit state Method) , Section 6 Structural Design (Working stress Method) .An attempt has been made to unify the approach for the design of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structure, the code of practice for prestressed Concrete (IS :1343)is being revised simultaneously with this in view .Section 2and 3 could be applicable to both the codes , except where modified in the prestressed Concrete code.In some clauses the code recommends reference to specialist literature, since the current knowledge on some aspects of design has not yet crystallized .This has also been done in order to avoid burdening the code with a lot of details which may not be required for the design of majority of the structures.
